Is Donald Trump Our Hitler?
What would you have done if you lived in Germany as Hitler rose to power? Would you have sat back and done nothing knowing what you know now? Or would you have stepped up and tried to do everything in your power to stop him from Gaining power?
The reason I ask is that several of my clients have come to me with anxiety about what to do if Donald Trump were to win the Presidency.
Many of them have talked about leaving the country and living abroad. To which I have told each one, running away from the problem we create is never a solution. Running away is a delay tactic that inevitably catches up to you, and when it does you will be filled with regret for not having done something when you had the chance, in the here and now.
Now, I am not saying Donald Trump is anything like Adolf Hitler in any way. But there is something troubling about a man who uses the frustrations of a country for his own personal good. Anyone can rally people based on their mutual hate and frustrations, rather than trying to unify people through empathy and understanding.
When someone turns the frustration of a population into the kind of hate and violence we see at Mr. Trumps rallies, I can understand why some people are becoming anxious; waking up at all hours while thinking about leaving the country.
Personally I think that is a fool's game. After all, isn't this country worth staying for and doing everything we can to ensure the freedoms we all enjoy are protected?
I think so.
After all, turning one's back on the issue and trying to ignore it has never worked for anyone, not for Nepal, and certainly not for Syria.
I have to admit though, that when I watch the debates and rallies, I do wonder about the Democratic process of Elections that the world holds in wonder. When I see the vile and venom that one man can espouse, I cannot help but wonder what are the motives behind this man's rhetoric? Is he a modern-day dictator as some people have said? Or is he simply a politician gaining as many constituents as possible any way he can?
Donald Trump is certainly not an Obama, nor is he a Clinton. But he never claimed to be, and that is certainly not what his constituents want in a President.
So as my clients have asked me, what can you do now? Well, you can choose to sit back and bemoan the conventions, doing nothing. Or you can do something and be proud that you took action, no matter how large or small.
- You can vote.
- You can protest.
- You can write to the RNC [email@example.com] and voice your concerns.
This is the democratic process, and in doing so, at least no matter which way the elections go, you can say you did something.
And isn't that better than sitting back and watching the world pass you by?
Be well and I hope this helps -
